Photo messaging finally comes to iPhone

AT&T says multimedia messaging (MMS) will be available on the Apple iPhone starting Sept. 25. The feature, which allows users to attach video clips and such to emails, will be enabled by a “software update on that day,” says AT&T, the exclusive U.S. distributor of the iPhone.

Apple issues security patch for iPhone

Apple has issued a software patch to fix some security holes that independent security researchers recently discovered for the company’s vaunted iPhone. The software update that Apple said it released late Tuesday addresses several bugs and security issues, but most notably a flaw that could have allowed hackers to take control of the multimedia cellphone to spread spam or steal data if its owner was to visit a doctored website or Internet Wi-Fi hotspot. The iPhone hijacking vulnerability was only theoretical; there were no reports of criminals taking advantage of the glitch.

AT&T earnings show iPhone not that big of a hit

It turns out Apple’s (AAPL) much-ballyhooed iPhone wasn’t as big a seller as projected. AT&T (T), the exclusive service provider for Apple’s first cellphone, said Tuesday that it activated 146,000 iPhones after the first two days of sales, which fell on the final days of the second quarter. That is way below analysts’ estimates, which had ranged from 500,000 to 1 million.

Apple delays release of ‘Leopard’

Apple said it won’t be shipping its next-generation operating system in June as planned, saying it had to divert resources from the project so that it could launch its highly anticipated iPhone on time. The new shipment date for Mac OS X “Leopard” will be in October, the company said Thursday. The iPhone will make its debut in June as planned. The “iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and (quality assurance) resources from our Mac OS X team,” Apple said in a statement. Apple announced the iPhone — a smart phone that also serves as an iPod music player — in January to much fanfare. The Cupertino-based company said Thursday the iPhone is still on track to be shipped in late June and has passed several of the required certification tests. Apple, which had previously said Leopard would be available in the spring, had hoped to release the Mac operating system upgrade at its Worldwide Developers Conference, a five-day event in San Francisco that starts June 11. Instead, a “near-final version” of Leopard will be ready for the developers at the conference, Apple said. “We think it’ll be worth the wait,” Apple said.
