Southwest begins testing Internet access

Southwest Airlines Co. has started testing wireless Internet access aboard one of its jets with plans to expand the test by early next month.

Southwest said Tuesday that the test will last a few months and eventually include four aircraft.

During the test, passengers will be able to log on free using their own laptop or smart phone — cellular technology won’t work.

Jim Smith, VK9NS (SK)

Jim Smith, VK9NS (ex-P29JS), of Norfolk Island, Australia, passed away Tuesday, February 10, after a short illness. He was 80. A noted DXer and ARRL member, Smith was #81 on the Islands on the Air (IOTA) Honour Roll.

John Kanzius, K3TUP (SK)

John Kanzius, K3TUP, of Erie, Pennsylvania, passed away February 18 in Florida from pneumonia. He was 64. Kanzius was best known for his research into finding a cure for cancer using radio waves, specifically 13.56 MHz.

Cellphones take flight on Ryanair

Budget carrier Ryanair has become the first European airline to launch in-flight cellphone service. The Irish discount airline is famous for finding ancillary sources of revenue, and cellphone calls and texting could be a cash cow. The service will cost £1.50 to £3 per minute (one pound is currently worth $1.43), 40p per text sent (incoming ones are free) and £1 to £2 for limited e-mails use.
