F8ZS Silent Key
October 15, 2007 by kb3ljm.
It is with sadness that I must inform our AMSAT colleagues, of the passing away of Jean Edmond Gruau F8ZS, President of Radio Amateur Club de l’Espace and Honorary President of AMSAT-France.
Jean was the father of ARSENE radioamateur mini satellite, launched in May, 1993.
He retired a few years ago from his position as Inspecteur General of the French space agency (CNES) that he contributed to create as well as the European Space Center in Kourou, French Guyana.
Jean F8ZS was a very kind man with always a lot of good stories to tell to his visiting friends about his large experience in radio transmissions and preventive failure security in space industry.
73 de Bernard, F6BVP, AMSAT France founding President

October 15, 2007 by kb3ljm.
This week, ARRL Letter readers are in luck! The ARRL’s very own Doctor, author of the popular QST column “The Doctor Is IN,” answers a question from his mailbag:

Will cellphones replace paper at airline check-in counters?
October 15, 2007 by kb3ljm.
Airlines may soon be asking you to ditch your paper boarding passes and instead check-in using your cellphone or BlackBerry, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The Houston Chronicle writes that “a new bar code standard” was announced Thursday by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), something that could “pave the way” to allowing customers to use cellphones and other mobile devices to check-in for flights. Several airlines -– including Continental and Southwest -– tell the Houston Chronicle they’re interested, but say the Transportation Security Administration would first have to make allowances for customers who have checked in wirelessly to pass through security without a paper boarding pass.

Bettye Tiemeyer, K3VRZ
October 7, 2007
It was with great sadness that we learned that Miss Bettye passed away. The familiar “This is K-3-V-R-Zed” was often heard on the repeater, along with Bettye’s good nature and kind words for all. I heard her on the repeater a week or so ago and made sure to break in to say hello, as she often did when she heard me…. We will all miss her. Bettye was 80 …

We were deeply saddened to learn of Lou’s passing. Although a ham and a BRATS member for a relatively short time, Lou participated in many public service events…. We will miss Lou and his dedication…
