Volunteers Still Needed for the Baltimore Marathon

Greetings Amateur Radio Public Service Volunteers,

I am in urgent need of 8 more Amateur Radio Operators to help with communications for the Under Armour 7th Annual Baltimore Marathon. Most of the remaining assignments are during the morning from 7:00 am to Noon at early opening water stops around Baltimore City or shadowing officials at the M&T Bank Stadium at Camden Yards.

You will have heard in the news that several runners died and hundreds more suffered heat related problems at weekend marathons in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Washington. Daytime temperatures in Baltimore are expected to be cooler by Race Day. To date, about 3500 marathoners, 6000 half marathoners, 600 relay teams, and over 2000 5K runners are registered. While all of the First Aid Stations are presently covered, we need to cover the remaining Water Stops. Please mention these open assignments to other Amateurs in your QSOs.

Mile 8.1: Phillips Seafood Offices from 7:00-11:00 AM
Mile 12: Little Havana Restaurant from 7:00 - 11:30 AM
Mile 12.5-relay: Rash Field from 7:00 - 11:30 AM
Half start: Light St.@ Conway St. from 7:30-10:00 AM
Mile 14.5: Aliceanna and Wolfe St. from 7:00 AM-1:00 PM
Mile 20.5: Lake Montibello from 7:30 AM-2:00 PM
Village: M&T Bank Stadium, InfoPDFD” from 7 AM to 3 PM
Net Control “Off site, Backup” from 7 AM to 3 PM

EVENT OVERVIEW
EVENT: Baltimore Marathon, Half Marathon, Team Relay, and 5K Race in Baltimore City.
WHEN: Saturday October 13th, 2007, 6:00 A.M TO 3:00 P.M.
WHERE: M&T Bank Stadium and various locations around Baltimore City (Follow Link below to see Course Map).

Amateur Radio Operators will provide communications as follows:
NET CONTROL
STADIUM: 2 Shadows, and 2 liaisons for Police/Medical and Info Tents (requires handhelds and extra batteries).
WATER STOPS/FIRST AID: Fixed point water stops across the City (requires handhelds and/or mobiles).

The Under Armour 6th Annual Baltimore Marathon Running Festival will take place on Saturday, October 13. The Marathon (26.2 miles) will start and finish at the M&T Bank Stadium (home of the Baltimore Ravens). Amateur Radio Operators will provide communications to ensure the safety of runners and spectators in the event. Operators will staff Water Stops/First Aid Stations throughout the day. Hams will shadow the Event Organizer and the Race Director at the stadium, ride in a vehicle ahead of the lead runner, and conduct a communications net between critical points along the course, medical and water support stations, and the start/ finish. Johns Hopkins Medicine will staff First Aid stations along the course. Water drink stations will be located about every mile.
